Martin McAssey Glass

Reviews

Below are reviews from students who have attended one of Martin's stained glass, fused glass or glass painting weekly courses or one day workshops.

“A very productive day, added greatly to my knowledge on tiffany work, great instruction, learnt some new techniques and Martin is a first class instructor”.

Dave Aspinall (Introduction to traditional stained glass one-day workshop).

“This was an excellent course and Martin is a fantastic tutor, guiding you with his expert knowledge. You quickly start to see results and at the end of the day you have a quality made project to take home. A great experience”.

Nigel Marsh (Introduction to traditional stained glass one-day workshop).

“Very clear, concise instruction with plenty of positive encouragement throughout. Wonderfully clean and organised workspace with loads of room and all tools easily to hand - no sharing necessary so no hanging about waiting for equipment!”.

Sue Bullock (Introduction to traditional stained glass one-day workshop).

“It was a great workshop; the group was small enough to ensure everyone had help when required. There was a large choice of glass, colours and textures to work with. Martin is a great teacher, very professional with lots of patience - especially for an old slow coach like me!!! ?Everything was demonstrated carefully and accurately, safety for ourselves and the equipment was explained thoroughly at each stage of the workshop. It was fun and a great sense of achievement fulfilled”.

Paula Fozard (Introduction to traditional stained glass one-day workshop).

“I found the one-day workshop a great introduction into leaded stained glass. I now feel I have gained the confidence to buy the right tools and materials to have a try at a new hobby and get some good results. Martin is an excellent teacher and made everybody welcome”.

Chris Maxwell (Introduction to traditional stained glass one-day workshop)".

“Good facilities, great teaching, right number of students. Work challenging but achievable. Provision of stool helpful, I liked the library facility and appreciated the free coffee / tea on demand”.

Richard Burslem (Introduction to Tiffany stained glass one-day workshop).

“All three workshops were well planned and executed for all levels of ability, and great fun. Martin is a great exponent of the art being an artist and teacher rolled into one! I personally enjoyed the fused glass a little more, as the technical level was not as taxing!! Having said that, I am very proud of my first "creations". Yes, you take home a fully completed piece every course!”.

Breedon Beveridge (Introduction to Tiffany stained glass / Traditional stained glass / fused glass one-day workshop).

“It was an excellent day learning something new, in Bryan's case, and a great refresher for me. It was especially nice to have something finished at the end of the day that we could be proud of, rather than just practising”.

Elizabeth and Bryan Vershowske (Introduction to Tiffany stained glass one-day workshop).

“I thoroughly enjoyed the day from start to finish. Martin is an excellent tutor, patient, knowledgeable and didn't talk for too long so we could get started almost immediately. I liked the fact that after "stage 1" as it were, we had the next process carefully explained and so on. That way, there wasn't too much information to absorb all in one go. Also I appreciated the fact that despite there being more experienced people in the class, Martin began at the very beginning. I shall carry away the lovely phrase "don't ask too much of the glass" and will remember that for future forays into stained glass!”.

Margaret Davies (Christmas decoration Tiffany stained glass one-day workshop).

“I enjoyed the whole experience. Martin is extremely welcoming and an excellent tutor. ?I feel I have learnt enough for me to continue my hobby at home independently; it was an excellent day in the workshop. Martin makes the tasks easy to fallow and I am looking forwards to looking at the other courses. Excellent value, keep up the good work.”.

Sue Hall (Christmas decoration Tiffany stained glass one-day workshop).

“New ideas. Inspiration. Course content. Martins teaching style. Learning the basics of mosaic using glass and tile. The cake.”.

Suzanne McDonald (Introduction to mosaics one-day workshop).

“There was a good selection of materials to work with plus having the templates already available was useful. Doing the small coaster first was a good introduction to the basic technique before moving on to the larger project for the remainder of the day. Advice was always available if needed - it was a nice, friendly relaxed atmosphere and I enjoyed the golden oldies on the radio!”.

Linda Latif (Introduction to mosaics one-day workshop) October 2014.

“Martin is a very knowledgeable and experienced tutor. His approach is very hands on, with working examples and help throughout the well thought through 1-day course. I took home a piece of stained glass which now hangs in my conservatory. Martin provides one to one tuition, in a great workshop, which is kept neat and tidy, as you would expect from a professional tutor”.

Mike Croudson (Introduction to traditional stained glass one-day workshop).

“Martin is a great teacher; he was calm and gave me confidence to tackle each stage of the project. If anything went wrong, he was always reassuring that the problem could be solved. He was also very careful about safety”.

Trudi Parsons (Introduction to traditional stained glass one-day workshop).

“Martin is a gentleman who has patience, skill and dedication. His workshop was a delight to attend. Thank you”.

Paula McCay (Introduction to traditional stained glass one-day workshop).

“Lovely new studio - very bright and plenty of space to spread out - already planning for my next course”.

Amy Lewis (Stained glass Wednesday evening course).

“Lovely relaxed workshop but thoroughly taught. Martin is extremely patient, great instruction but always encourages your own creativity. The surroundings at Abbeydale Hamlet are lovely and peaceful and the home made cake is divine!”.

Mandy Stephens (Introduction to fused glass one-day workshop).

“A brilliant day, had been looking forward to it for a long time and it was even better than anticipated. I was also amazed at just how much we made within one day. Will definitely be experimenting further with fusing glass. Martin was as supportive and encouraging as ever and as always a great source of knowledge. Thanks very much for a thoroughly absorbing & enjoyable day”.

Colin Baldwin (Introduction to fused glass one-day workshop).

“Constructive, well run, good materials equipment and excellent guidance. Really nice to have been able to produce a piece in the day’s course learning quite a few different skills on the way. Wish we were closer to come to your evening courses but we will be coming to more day courses. Thanks”.

Graham Johnston (Introduction to traditional stained glass one-day workshop).

“The magical mysteries of stained glass were unfolded by Martin on this workshop. It was both hard work and enjoyable and I look at my light catcher as it reflects in the sun and remember cutting the different pieces of glass, pushing the lead into shape and the tremendous sense of achievement we all had at the end of the session. I can't believe I made it!”.

Agnes Benoit-Asselman (Introduction to traditional stained glass one-day workshop).

“First class facilities, small group of great people eager to learn, excellent tuition by Martin in a relaxed atmosphere. ??Martin is an excellent teacher giving each student expert guidance and belief in achieving their goal. His classes are small with a relaxed atmosphere putting everyone at ease. His instructions are clear and precise being very encouraging and patient and you become completely absorbed in what you making. The workshop is well equipped and spacious with lots of reference martial, images and samples of other student’s work. The group I meet that day all left very happy, proudly holding their first piece of stained glass. I for one wish to continue this as a hobby. ??Would highly recommend these classes if you are thinking of having a go. Just wish this workshop was nearer to home, would love to sign up for a weekly course”.

Christine Burrows (Introduction to traditional stained glass one-day workshop).

“I enjoyed being able to make something I could take home and feel proud of, also learning a new skill and feeling like I could do it! I'll definitely be attending one of the weekly courses soon”.

Beth O'Donovan (Introduction to traditional stained glass one-day workshop).

“I liked learning about the tools and techniques of stained glass working. I thought that the course projects allowed me to learn a wide range of stained glass working tools and techniques. I liked the idea of taking home a completed project”.

Clive Davies (Introduction to traditional stained glass one-day workshop).

“Clear information, friendly atmosphere. Time whizzed by!”.

Di Earnshaw (Introduction to traditional stained glass one-day workshop).

“This is the second one-day workshop of Martin's that I have taken part in, as I live too far away to join regular classes. The new workshop at Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet is very good indeed and Martin's planning and delivery of these one day courses remains exemplary. At the end, even if you don't want to take things any further, you have a really nice piece of glass to take away with you. Personally, I left with a lot more than that on both occasions and I'm looking forward to Martin planning some follow-up workshops for us long-distance enthusiasts!”.

James Wilkinson (Introduction to Tiffany stained glass one-day workshop).

“Small, friendly groups with individual tuition. Work at your own pace and no question too stupid. Opportunity to work both Tiffany and lead the opportunity to make a project piece of your choosing”.

Justine Wieteska (Stained glass Monday evening course).

“I enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and being able to work at your own pace on projects. Martin has plenty of time to help where needed and offer advice on the best way forward with your project. All the tools you need are in the workshop and materials can be purchased from Martin from odd glass pieces to lead and solder plus boards. Martin has a small library of stained glass books so you can look through them for ideas and patterns”.

Marie Webster (Stained glass Wednesday afternoon course).

“I always enjoy the one to one attention which Martin manages to give to all his students. The atmosphere is always convivial and fun. Everyone is encouraged and helped to produce a piece of work which is invariably amazing no matter what level of skill you may or may not have!”.

Sue Coonan (Stained glass Wednesday evening course).

“I loved the idea that I could do anything I wanted in stained glass, and Martin would make it work. Very pleased with both my pieces”.

Harold Cataquet (Stained glass Friday morning course).

“I enjoyed learning the Tiffany technique and being able to produce a nice piece of work at the end of it. Very rewarding experience”.

Elsa Aron (Stained glass Friday morning course).

“Really enjoyed the whole day. Martin is an excellent teacher - very encouraging and patient. Came home proudly showing my finished work to my husband and family and they were extremely impressed”.

Michaela Summers (Introduction to traditional stained glass one-day workshop).

“Patient tuition which was adapted to meet our needs, warm friendly welcoming environment, expert tuition, overall a relaxed day which initiated us into the mysteries of stained glass and from which we brought home our first completed work with great pride”.

Fiona and Alice (Introduction to traditional stained glass one-day workshop).

“It was a really lovely day and I enjoyed it all! High points. It's the way you made me believe right from the start that I could achieve a worthwhile result in one day. Instruction was clear, detailed but focused. You give each 'student' individual attention, always positive comments. You know your subject. It was very interesting to see the work of other students, some really beautiful stuff in the making”.

Jill Barraclough (Introduction to Tiffany stained glass one-day workshop).

“I enjoyed everything about the course, even the elements that I found challenging. Martin has so much patience, even when things go wrong there never felt like a problem. The time just flew each evening and it was just so good to see a completed piece of work at the end of the course”.

Penny Curtis (Stained glass Monday evening course).

“It was a really enjoyable day. Your knowledge and ability to teach a group was great and I learnt a lot about how to do stained glass. I was really excited and pleased with the end product and would like to start making stained glass now!”.

Aleida Richens (Introduction to traditional stained glass one-day workshop).

“I loved it all! I don't think I'm a natural but Martin was so supportive and really help me believe in myself. I enjoyed both the Tiffany and traditional Lead techniques. The aspect I enjoyed the most was seeing all the pieces come together to make a unique item. Also grinding, I loved grinding!”.

Mandy Riley (Stained glass Thursday morning course).

“I enjoyed learning the basic methods of glass cutting + positioning to make the desired pattern. Was fascinating seeing the window take shape gradually”.

Vanessa Barrett (Bespoke introduction to traditional stained glass one-day workshop).

“I enjoy this course because everything you need is at hand the class is limited to four people so if you need help you get it quickly. Martin can supply you with equipment that you can purchase and take home and you get to see other projects so you have an idea of what can be achieved”.

Marie Webster (Stained glass Wednesday afternoon course).

“It was a blast. Martin very efficient, the day is not padded out with unnecessary blather. He paced it to suit us and was helpful throughout”.

Catherine Layton (Bespoke introduction to traditional stained glass one-day workshop).

“I enjoyed the opportunity to actually finish a piece of work - because of the very good tuition and having such a small group allowed us all to use martin when we wanted/needed. We didn't have to share any tools/equipment which you often find in one-day workshop and there was plenty of room/choice plus a wonderful lunch”.

Jayne Bazely (Introduction to traditional stained glass one-day workshop).

“I so enjoyed this! Great bunch of people and martins a good teacher. It made me want to go away, buy the equipment and do it at home as a hobby, it was so much fun! Well worth the money for a great experience”.

June Lindley (Bespoke introduction to traditional stained glass one-day workshop).

“I enjoyed learning about the process from beginning to end in a relaxed and supportive environment. This was a really enjoyable day. Thank you very much”.

Mary Dalgleish (Introduction to Tiffany stained glass one-day workshop).

“I enjoyed the whole course as I have never done anything like this before, the instructions were clear and help always available. Leaving at the end of the day with my own piece of stained glass was wonderful. There was only three of us and we got on well together and with Martin, it was a great experience and I hope to be able to do more at some future date. Thank you”.

Joanne Powis (Introduction to traditional stained glass one-day workshop).

“Thoroughly enjoyable day with a very pleasant helpful teacher, I found that the intense concentration helped me switch off from work”.

Beth Eaton (Introduction to traditional stained glass one-day workshop).

“I enjoyed being shown the techniques in a step by step process and then being able to apply them straightaway made the learning very straightforward and stress-free. All in all, with regular cuppas through the day, it was a welcoming and relaxing introduction to the world of cutting glass and lead for fun without getting cut yourself!”.

Alison Riley (Introduction to traditional stained glass one-day workshop).

“As a 'veteran' of 4 courses under Martin's expert guidance I took this opportunity to revisit techniques learned before on previous courses, working in lead as I had mostly worked in Tiffany more recently. Martin was as helpful and encouraging as ever, striking an excellent balance between allowing the student to explore and develop but always being there to guide, advise and suggest. Monday evenings will not be the same this summer without the relaxation and satisfaction of a stained glass course to attend!”.

Colin Baldwin (Stained glass Monday evening course).

“Martins courses provide the freedom to work in a well-equipped environment where professional help and advice is always close at hand. Martin is very keen to let you explore and challenge the boundaries of the traditional art of both lead and Tiffany glass work. I have enjoyed his classes immensely and will always value his professional opinion”.

Gary Giles (Stained glass Monday evening course).

“Lost count how many of these courses I've done but I keep coming back for more - completely addicted”.

Clare Cheetham (Stained glass Thursday morning course).

Beverley Inkles (Stained glass Monday evening course).

“I enjoyed learning new skills and making things I could never have imagined being able to create. It was also great fun with good company and a lot of support available. I enjoyed learning from other people’s skills and creations and being able to progress much more quickly than I thought”.

Claire Brookes (Stained glass Thursday evening course).

“I feel very lucky that Martin is the tutor randomly chosen for the first one day course I attended. I have since attended 3 further courses and thoroughly enjoyed each one combining a mix of lead and tiffany work. The pieces I have created are very special to me and I now have the confidence and ability to have a go at home”.

Sally Ainsworth (Stained glass Tuesday evening course).

“Thoroughly enjoyable day, Martin was informative interesting and very patient but not patronising. He is a gifted teacher and is able to impart his knowledge at the most basic level. He is very patient and is happy to show you the same thing again and again yet resists the urge to take over. Normally I dislike going out on a cold dark evening but for this class it was a pleasure. I'll be back!”.

Hannah Nasse (Stained glass Monday evening course).

I'll have to try hard to devise my next project to keep him on his toes!”.

Amy Lewis (Stained glass Wednesday evening course).

“This was my second course, it is a great place to learn and work. The workshop works really well and with only four students at the time there is plenty of time to ask questions and get tips from Martin. Martin is a great teacher and he enjoys his work, which makes the course very enjoyable for the students”.

Bianca Thompson (Stained glass Wednesday evening course).

“I really enjoyed this course, having never done stained glass before but have had experience in 2D and 3D art and design. Martin and the other students were friendly and welcoming, showing great interest in our projects. I have learnt the basics of the stained glass process and would be keen to learn more, if time permitted”.??“I would recommend this course to anyone frustrated in the modern office work environment, wishing to focus on something creative and practical and to create something unique for their home. Good value for money, expert teacher, good location”.

Alex Scott (Stained glass Friday morning course).

Gary Giles (Stained glass Wednesday evening course).

Marie Webster (Stained glass Wednesday afternoon course).

Hannah Evans (Stained glass Monday evening course).

Also I love the way you can see other pieces, not necessarily on your course and loved seeing Martins gorgeous window, which was a commission piece”.

Mandy Stephens (Stained glass Monday evening course).

“I really enjoyed the course which gave me the opportunity to create stained glass, as well as learn. I think the atmosphere that Martin creates in his studio allows this to happen almost effortlessly. I also appreciate how flexible and open Martin is to talk through new ideas and suggestions, and he does this in a way which doesn't leave any student feeling deflated, even if they've suggested something which clearly on reflection isn't going to work. I think the course in run very professionally, to a high standard, which Martin maintains throughout”.

Mark Knowles (Stained glass Tuesday evening course).

“Love my mirror and fan lamps that I made. I love having a hobby with an end product; it makes the learning so worthwhile. Thoroughly enjoyed the class, met 3 wonderful women (don't think I have ever laughed so much on a Friday before!). Martin, as always, was an excellent teacher”.

Beverley Inkles (Stained glass Friday afternoon course).

“This must be the 5th course I have attended with Martin and each term I feel that he has helped me to achieve the impossible. I enjoy the friendly atmosphere and one to one attention he willingly gives to each of his students. No problem seems too minor or indeed major for Martin to assist in tackling, and every student always seems to magically produce a beautiful piece of unique glass at the end of each term. Highly recommended”.

Kearn Nicklin (Stained glass Friday afternoon course).

“This was my 3rd 12-week course with Martin and they just keep getting better - maybe because I am mastering the skills to a greater degree or maybe it's simply because my Wednesday evenings seem very dull when I'm not cutting or soldering. Either way I'm back in September to finish off my current project and get started on some leaded work”.

Amy Lewis (Stained glass Wednesday evening course).

“Thanks for your gentle leadership and encouragement, having now done two terms I am looking forward attending another term next year. On the course I particularly enjoyed working at my own speed, being encourage by Martins teaching about what next to do. Nina Patterson (Stained glass Thursday Morning course).

“The way I was introduced immediately to the skills involved in stained glass. The sessions were always well paced and I am not sure where 2 hours went!! It seemed to fly past! I am very much a visual 'hands on' learner and this course was exactly for me. I Have absolutely LOVED every minute of it. There is loads to learn and I found a high level of satisfaction. Martin, you are an excellent teacher and a big thank you. See you in September!!".

The organisation of the materials, instructions and workspace were all brilliant, it never felt rushed and Martin's patience and guidance was really great. The end product was a lovely reminder of a great day. The lunch was excellent too!".

“I enjoyed learning both tiffany and lead work but preferred the tiffany in the end and love the end result of my own tiffany piece - the chicken. I enjoyed the course more due to the fact that there were only four students so Martin was able to dedicate more time to explaining and assisting each and every one of us through our own projects. Martin was professional, an excellent teacher and was very patient”.

“I enjoyed many things - the fact that within 5 minutes of starting we were cutting glass, the level of supervision was spot on, all the necessary equipment was readily available, Martin's obvious enthusiasm for the medium and the ease in which he passed on knowledge and the fact that at the end of 12 short weeks I had produced three pieces of work which I now have proudly exhibited in our home”.

Martin has a very hands off approach which makes you get stuck in, so you learn and apply the techniques yourself in a supportive and friendly atmosphere. Overall a very satisfying and practical learning experience which gives you a very solid start on the road to stained glass lead and foil work”.
